Dark Sun

The is the second of two pieces.  The first on of these 3-layered suns was commissioned by a customer whose daughter’s school was having an auction.   Once I finished the fabrication, I brought it to her 4th grade class where the students painted it with bright yellows, oranges and some red to depict the sun. The class theme was a “Bright and Shining Future”.  My sun, though dark, isn’t so much a statement, but that I liked the copper acid wash and its effect on abraded galvanneal sheet metal.  The dark gray tones and the old penny copper look I think worked well.

This is a hammered sheet steel piece. After drawing the image onto the metal I then trace the lines with a chisel to set the steel and to also see the drawing of the back side from which I hammer it. In some cases I hammer from both sides.  Depending on what the design dictates, I use patinas, paints or plate with copper It is then clear coated for durability.
